It is one of the methods from the second triad described in Trividh Pariksha for the assessment of diseases.

The physician should examine the patient by using his sense organs except tongue to know the nature of a disease by direct observation.

The factors examined by the four sense organs are
  • Eyes -Colour, shape, proportions and the lustre; the healthy or diseased look of the body.

  • Ears -Intestinal sounds, the sounds of the joints and the finger knuckles, variations in the patient's voice or any other sounds that may be observed in any part of the body.

  • Nose -Abnormal or normal odour of the body.

  • Touch -Normal or abnormal feel of the body, temperature of the body, swelling roughness or dryness, softness of the skin.

The examination of the sense of taste is prohibited and should be done indirectly by inference.
