Dentition is one of the important land-mark in assessing the growth and development of a child.
|
|
Period of Dentition
|
 |
- Humans have thirty-two teeth. Eight of them erupt once and become the teeth mounted in own/original (roots),
the rest are dvija (erupting twice).
- After birth in what-so-ever month the teeth appear,
they fall and reappear in the same year.
- In the middle upper row the two main teeth are named rajadanta (central incisors), they are
sacred. If these two get spoilt the person becomes unfit.
- Situated on both the sides are vasta (lateral incisors), lateral to
these are two damstra (canines). The rest grow in original
roots and are called hanavya.
- Similar formation can be found in the lower jaw as
well.

Causes of early and later eruption of teeth
|
 |
- The appearance of teeth in girls is early and causes less trouble due to porousness of teeth and soft nature
of gums.
- In boys teeth appear much later and cause many troubles due to compactness of teeth and stable nature
of gums.
- It is also noted by the great saints that insemination, manifestation, eruption, development , falling , reappearance , cessation, stability, decaying, looseness, failing, firmness and weakness
of teeth depend upon racial specification, period of insemination, nature, and
once own deeds.
- Falling and reappearance of teeth mainly depend upon the status of bone and bone-marrow as these are said to be basic factors responsible for dentition, besides, in condition of decline of bone (asthi-ksaya) the tendency of falling of teeth increases.
|
|
Inauspicious Teeth
|
 |
- The teeth which are less or more in number with undivided gum are called inauspicious. The birth with teeth, first eruption of upper teeth, eruption of scattered teeth; presence
of less teeth or more teeth, discoloured teeth and cracked teeth are
also inauspicious.
- In human beings, fourth month onwards teeth are inseminated.
- The child born with teeth is abnormal which is mainly
caused due to intake of slesmala diet during pregnancy. It is considered inauspicious even today in folklore.

|
Types of teeth-eruption
|
 |
Teeth-eruption is said to be of four types i.e.
- Samudga means decrease in number due to falling
perpetually.
- Samvrta means inauspicious and dirty.
- Vivrta means worn-out teeth, invariably affected
due to salivation, getting easily discoloured and easily afflicted with diseases.
- Danta-sampat means healthy teeth with good growth,
of the same size, white in colour and having a strong and
firm root.
|
|
Period of teeth eruption and their effects
|
 |
- The teeth inseminated during the fourth month are weak, decay early and are
afflicted with many diseases;
- The teeth inseminated during the fifth month are usually
shaky, with morbid sensitivity and get easily afflicted with various
diseases,
- The teeth inseminated during the sixth month are inverted, dirty, discoloured and susceptible for dental carries;
- The teeth inseminated during the seventh month are with two pockets,
stripped, broken, dry, irregular and protuberant;
- The teeth inseminated during the eight month have the best qualities. Complaints, disease-free state and slight protuberance of upper
teeth; evenness, unctuousness and compactness of gums and stableness of roots are the
good qualities of teeth.
