Ayurveda
is a complete and complex system of healthcare having
a traditional system of medicine. There are in all eight
branches of ayurveda and in that Prasutitantra i.e. the
obstetrics and gynaecology section form one of the main branch.
The ayurvedic methods or practices, if followed during
pregnancy, will lead to a complication-free delivery.
Ayurveda has a step-by-step account on what should be done
during pregnancy, the first step being the ideal way and the
right time of conceiving a baby.
It is followed by the mode of life
that needs to be followed religiously by the pregnant lady.
Apart from this specific emphasis is given on the monthwise
nutrition and medication.
Then detailed description of the monthwise
development of the foetus and effect
of woman's psychology on the foetus is also provided.
Peadiatrics is another important section in Ayurveda, which
focuses on the care that needs
to be taken after the birth of the baby. Information on what to
feed and the right way of feeding
the baby has been given utmost priority.
The various disorders and complications during pregnancy
alongwith their treatment have also been highlighted. The
ayurvedic herbs and foods help in promoting harmony of mind
during menstrual problems, menopause,
and hysterectomy and
prevent abortion and infertility.
Apart from this usage of proper contraceptives
for a better sex life has also been provided.
Ayurveda has some unique features too like determining
the sex of the baby during pregnancy, the procedure to be
adopted for achieving progeny
of desired sex, the care taken the moment the baby comes out
of the maternal passage, post
partum care, the religious
customs that needs to be followed, information on breast
feeding, employment of a wet
nurse, the ideal
playground etc.
Ayurveda stresses on maintaining the health and vitality of all
the systems thereby playing an important role in enhancing our
