Naturopathy and Massage
|
 |
Massage may be useful adjunct for those who are too weak to take sufficient exercise and for those having fatty encumbrances. Massage may be described as a passive exercise. But it would be a serious mistake for anyone to become a slave to massage, because on the whole it is not as natural and useful as exercise combined with the baths.
It must be noted that the safest massage is self-massage. Massage must be done non-violently. Very few professionals, it would seem, are aware of this basic principle. Massage done on safe lines improves skin health, making it softer and more elastic and efficient. It affects blood circulation, provides
relief from fatigue, weakness and pain.
An important caution to observe is that massage of the abdomen, self
etc, should be commenced only after clearing the bladder and the bowels. At least there should have been an attempt for a bowel evacuation. This type of abdominal massage,
by taking a small enema, will be helpful in inducing a good motion and in bringing about a feeling of lightness. This will be specially helpful when there is a headache or any pain as a result of clogged bowels.
Foreign matter in the body is stirred up by massage: it is displaced and distributed in the surrounding areas and so there is a feeling of lightness in the affected area. It is left to a larger area to dispose of the foreign matter. Massage alone will not be able to produce any lasting benefit.
Massage stirs upon the heat in the system. It is not proper to leave it like that, because that will induce a tired feeling afterwards. It is good to finish the massage with a cool bath, chiefly the spinal bath.
